In 2021, our community hiked more than 54,000 miles for diabetes awareness, prevention, and management.

The Problem

According to the CDC, 122 Million Americans are pre-diabetic or living with diabetes.

Our Solution: Get Outside

The research is clear - spending time outside has healing benefits for the mind, body, and spirit. As a starting point for diabetes prevention & management, the CDC recommends walking for 30 minutes per day, five days per week. You don’t have to have to travel far to experience the healing power of nature, you can do this in the city or town where you work, live, or play.

Meet the Experts

  • When former collegiate athlete and competitive skydiver, Sydney Williams, unexpectedly found herself on the receiving end of a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, while grappling with unresolved trauma from a decades-old sexual assault, she set out on a mission: turn her pain into power. Two hikes across Catalina Island and 80 miles later, she founded Hiking My Feelings® to help others tap into the mind-body connection and healing power of nature that helped kick her self-limiting beliefs and disease into remission.

Having more than 12 years of marketing experience with Fortune 500 companies and emerging brands, Sydney serves up her “truth juice” style of storytelling to break wide open tough conversations with practical, powerful content and experiences. Over the years, she’s been featured on the SXSW stage, as well as in Health Magazine, Diabetic Living Magazine, Huffington Post, Psychology Today, US News & World Report, and numerous other publications. Today, she is the author of Hiking My Feelings: Stepping Into the Healing Power of Nature and travels across the country empowering others to summit their personal mountains on their way to becoming Well Beings.

  • Hailing from New Hampshire, Barry grew up in the outdoors and has hiked most of the White Mountains and Presidential range, in addition to various walkabouts around the US. Before Hiking My Feelings was a thing, Barry was a professional skydiver for more than 16 years. He didn’t do tandem skydives, he taught people how to skydive by themselves - a feat that requires deep trust, clear communication, and compassionate instruction. Combining a degree in psychology from the University of New Hampshire, his experience as an educator and his training as a Wilderness EMT, Barry is uniquely equipped to lead hikes, facilitate our educational programming, and ensure everyone’s safety in the outdoors at our events. His leadership and teaching style is more Mister Miyagi than drill sergeant.

Barry’s special sauce is in how he shows his support. Without his grounding presence, nothing you see here today would be possible. The safe space he created in his partnership with Sydney allowed her to explore how trauma manifested in her mind and body and how the outdoors could help her heal. Without his support, without that safe space to show up without our masks, this work would not be possible.

  • Melanie Wassman has deep roots in yoga, nutrition, herbology and reiki energy healing, all with the intention of nourishing the body from the inside out. Beyond using food as medicine, Melanie found a passion for plant botanicals and herbs and their incredible healing properties.

The deeper she began to study herbology, the more awareness she had for the toxic ingredients that are found in most personal care products. When she could not find any replacement products on the market that met her standards, she began to create her own. With her background in Clinical Herbalism, she was able to easily blend together the perfect oils with plant botanicals and create her own personal care products from the earth. She began to share these products with family and friends and from there, Spell Botanicals was born.

  • Kris Maynard, Founder of Glucose Revival, created the company out of his experiences as a Type 1 Diabetic and a firefighter/EMT because of the following factors:

    1. His position in the Air Force was taken away due to his diagnosis as a type 1 diabetic.

    2. For two years, his firefighter position was taken away, as a result of a low blood sugar incident.

    3. Living active is important to him; yet, as any diabetic knows, it is truly challenging to be active without a lot of preparation anticipating a drop in blood sugar.

    4. Most importantly, in 2018, Kris’ and his wife learned that their youngest son has two of the autoantibodies that predict that he too will likely be diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in the next few years.

It has become his mission to help others live their lives to their fullest extent, despite a diabetes diagnosis.

  • Steve Turner weighed 250 pounds in the fall of 2016 and was just diagnosed with diabetes. The lifetime New Hampshire resident was instructed to hit the gym and lose weight.

He followed his doctor’s orders and went to the gym – twice.

Instead, he hit the street and took up running. His goal was to run to the next telephone pole on his street; when he reached that pole, he tried to get to the next one, and then the next one, and the next one, and so on.

One telephone pole became two, and one mile became two. He got to the point where he wanted to train and compete the following August at the Saunders at Rye Harbor 10K.

10K became 100 miles, where he placed 10th in the Mid-state Massive Ultra Trail race. As it turns out, 100 miles was not enough for Turner. Shortly after finishing his longest race he began his year-long training for the Moab 240 Endurance Run, a 240.3-mile race through some of Utah's most stunning and challenging terrain.

Not always an endurance athlete, in 2017 Mike was on his way to developing double diabetes as he continued to put on weight. Through a drastic series of changes in management by way of diet, exercise, and diabetes care, he began shedding the extra weight and stopped using diabetes as an excuse.

Mike has been interviewed on various diabetes podcasts including Diabetes Daily Grind, Juicebox Podcast, and Diabetic Tim Podcast.
